Many RV solar panel installations (right, below) feature middle-of-roof penetration and a direct attachment to the RV roof, causing instability, roof leaks, and heat build-up issues. This type of installation also prevents maximum solar input from bi-facial panels. Don’t make this mistake!

How many solar panels do I need?
What voltage is your RV battery pack? Example: 14.4 V (Effectively, a 12-volt system)
What is the available square footage for solar panels on your RV roof? Example: 24 sq. ft. (a space 3’ long x 8’ wide)
What is the amperage of your RV solar control unit? Example: 40A
So, in this example, needed wattage is: 12 (volts) x 40 (amps) = 480 watts
This wattage could be obtained by (4) 115-watt solar panels or (2) 220-watt panels. But your available square footage is only enough to accommodate (3) solar panels that are 30” wide, so you should order (2) Renogy 220-watt bi-facial panels to get the most compatible, total wattage from the available space.
